A Brown Jordan signature collection originally designed by Tadao E. Inouye, Kantan was chosen by the Department of Commerce to be a part of the U.S. exhibit at the 1959 Industrial World’s Fair in Tokyo. In 1968, it was incorporated into the “Please Be Seated” exhibition sponsored by the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. In 2013, designer Richard Frinier at the request of Brown Jordan redesigned the collection in collaboration with Brown Jordan when it was newly named Kantan II, executed in natural brass as a luxurious update to the mid-century classic that received numerous awards, including most recently an International Casual Furnishings Association Design Excellence Award in 2012 in the Tubular Metal category.
